Pseudidae :
A small group of eastern-South American frogs. Composed of 2 genera. The best know member of this group is the “paradoxical frog” (Pseudis paradoxa) from Brazil, north to Venezuela and east to Trinidad and Tobago. Their tadpoles reach an enormous size of up to 220 mm and produce adults ranging 3 to 4 times smaller. Their distinctive feature is an elongate, ossified cartilage between the penultimate and terminal phalanx on the hind feet. This added ossification might aid in swimming by providing more webbing surface area. The phylogenetic position of this group is still in debate; current molecular studies have placed this family within the Hylid subfamily hylinae.
